Creation Station: Tricks and Treats

The weather may be playing tricks on us–I mean why is it in the 80s and 90s in September?!–but fall is here. October has begun. And it’s time for another Creation Station blog hop! This month we’re featuring tricks (of the trade) and treats. My kiddos are all grown, so we don’t celebrate Halloween as much as when they were little…and because of that, I don’t usually purchase Halloween stampin’ supplies. So I’ve had to pull a few tricks out of my sleeve for this month’s theme.

I made a cute treat holder using Halloween colors and the super cute “Bird’s Eye View” stamp set. What do you think?

My first “trick” is to use colors associated with a holiday, especially if you don’t have stamp sets made especially for that holiday. I used Pumpkin Pie and Basic Black Card Stock along with Parakeet Party Designer Series Paper for a Halloween feeling. I colored the bird with Parakeet Party Stampin’ Blends and gave him some Pumpkin Pie glasses. Isn’t he adorable?!

Another “trick” I like to use is to make a paper pattern for a 3D project and keep the pattern for later reference. Here’s my pattern.

The pattern is cut to the same size as the starting card stock; in this case, 7.5″ by 6″. I score the paper pattern and then use a ruler to add the lines. For this project, I scored at .5″, 3.5″, 4″, and 7″ along the 7.5″ side of the card stock. Then I scored at .5″ and 1″ along the 6″ side. I draw an X where I will cut away a piece of the card stock and show which flaps need to be beveled. I also included the size of the Basic Black Card Stock mat and the DSP that goes on top.

My final “trick” is to punch or die cut from a piece that will be matted. For this box, I cut a circle from the Basic Black mat using a Stitched Shapes Die. Once I adhere the DSP, no one knows the mat has a piece cut from it!
